Rana Mohammad Sohail, MP

Member of Parliament, Bangladesh

Mr. Rana Mohammad Sohail was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 2018 with a nomination from Jatiyo Party. He is a presidium member of Jatiyo Party and a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Ministry of Finance.

Mr. Rana achieved 8th position in the combined merit list in Rajshahi Board in SSC in 1982. He also achieved 5th position in the combined merit list in the same board in 1984. He complited his undergraduate in physics and mathematics from Chittagong University and achieved 1st Class 1st position. He completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, in Finance (Investment) major and also achieved 1st Class 1st position. He then went on for a second MBA from University of Texas at Austin, USA, with a semester at London Business School (LBS), UK. Here also he did a major in Finance (Energy).

Mr. Sohail completed a 10-years career in Bangladesh Armed Forces and retired as a Major. He worked in energy and finance for eight years in the USA. Currently, alongside politics, he works as a business consultant from Dubai, UAE. He is also an avid farmer and owns an organic tea garden.

MP Sohail has been a practitioner and promoter of religious freedom all his life. As his life in politics gave him prominence, he has looked at it as an opportunity to stand for the marginalized people. As a member of Parliamentary Caucus on Migration and Development, Mr. Sohail took part in numerous national and international conferences, including the IMRF at UN HQ. Working in migration also allowed him to work closely in climate change, especially, climate induced migration; domestic and international.

His electoral constituency is JALDHAKA, in Nilphamari district. Total population of Jaldhaka is about 0.4 million, which comprises of 70% Muslims, 29% Hindus and 1% Christians. As an MP, he has been keen to protect the religious freedom of the minority of Jaldhaka. To forge a friendly coexistence of all faiths within the community, he has promoted open communication and compassion for each other. In the event of any religious hate crime somewhere in Bangladesh or India, MP Sohail has always used law enforcement to ensure safety of the minority and conducted open dialogues to ease tension. In spending government funds, he has been consistent to keep balanced allocation for place of worship of every faith. Besides, he regularly attendsreligious events and festivals of all the religions and ensures the enrolment of all children in schools, especially girls. He has been a strong voice in Jaldhaka in protecting the rights and safety of women.

He travelled extensively to a total of 65 countries around the globe; to all 50 states of the USA, UK and many other countries in America, Europe, Africa and Asia. He also represents Bangladesh to European Parliament, as a member of the National Delegation.
